Introducing the Region’s First Open And Upright MRI®
Dynamic Imaging Of Patients In Position That Pain Occurs

The next step in the evolution of MRI scanning is now available at the Charlotte office of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates. Our practice has the first and only imaging center in the Charlotte region, and is one of only two centers in North and South Carolina, to now offer an open, multi-position, Upright MRI®. This revolutionary diagnostic tool makes it possible to conduct weight-bearing studies and obtain dynamic imaging of patients in flexion, extension, rotation and lateral bending positions not previously possible with traditional MRI. The open design also makes a dramatic difference for patients who are claustrophobic or too large to comfortably undergo a recumbent MRI.

The example above shows actual scans from a patient with lower back problems. A recumbent MRI shows normal alignment of the vertebrae. A scan of the same patient taken with an Upright MRI revealed dramatic spinal instability.
“We can scan the patient in the actual position in which he or she is experiencing pain,” said Bryan Harmon, RT, Manager of Imaging Services for Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates. “ The Upright MRI allows us see what is occurring with each patient with the weight of the body on the spine and other supporting joints. In some cases, we may detect problems that could be missed with a standard MRI.”

High-Quality Images
The Upright MRI is based on proven high-field technology, which means it delivers exceptional scanning speed and high-resolution imaging. At Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates, all MRI scans are performed by experienced, certified technologists. Results are interpreted by board-certified neuroradiologists and reports are usually available within 24 hours.

Open Design Serves Specific Patient Populations
Our Upright MRI is the only true open MRI. This open design and the ability to scan patients in multiple positions benefits several patient populations:
  • Overweight patients – The Upright MRI can accommodate most patients up to 500lbs.
  • Claustrophobic patients – There is no enclosure or barrier in front of the patient’s face.
  • Scoliosis patients – The Upright MRI offers the first radiation-free monitoring of scoliosis, thereby reducing patients’ cancer risk.
  • Patients needing CT myelograms – Upright MRI may provide an alternative to avoid this very painful procedure.
