Charlotte-area Carolina NeuroSurgery & Spine Associates clinic locations to join Atrium Health

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 15, 2025 – In a move that deepens the connection between Atrium Health and Carolina NeuroSurgery & Spine Associates (CNSA), nearly 300 teammates at seven Charlotte-area CNSA clinics will join Atrium Health on Oct. 1. The collaboration with CNSA, the nation's largest neurosurgery practice, will expand patient access to advanced treatments and innovative care, strengthening their commitment to health services.

Atrium Health and CNSA have a longstanding and exclusive neurosurgery and spine partnership in the greater Charlotte area. “It’s a natural progression for us to engage in deeper collaboration with CNSA to address the evolving challenges and opportunities in modern health care,” said Dr. Jennifer Sullivan, senior vice president and enterprise lead for national service lines at Atrium Health. “By combining our resources, we aim to elevate the care we provide, ensuring patients benefit not only from the exchange of knowledge but also from care provided by top-tier specialists close to home.”

The newly formed team will establish the region's most advanced and comprehensive neurosurgery and spine program. Patients will continue to have access to more than 70 physicians and advanced practice providers, who will work collaboratively to ensure seamless, high-quality care. The team will focus on a range of services, from nonoperative treatment options and minimally invasive outpatient surgery to the most complex and life-enhancing surgical procedures.

“We are advancing our partnership to better meet the needs of our community,” said Dr. Mark Smith, president of CNSA. “With Atrium Health’s state-of-the-art facilities and comprehensive support services, we remain committed to providing compassionate, family-centered care. By combining our expertise, we will strengthen surgical and nonsurgical care for neurosurgery and spine patients and their families in our community.”

“This new chapter of the partnership will further strengthen the collaborative approach to patient care, integrate cutting-edge technologies, and expand access to specialized services, ensuring that patients receive the highest quality of care across the continuum of spine and neurosurgical treatments,” Sullivan said.

In 2021, the two organizations launched SpineFirst to elevate spine care delivery, aligning with the Joint Commission’s high standards for excellence in care coordination and promoting consistent communication across spine care settings. Atrium Health and CNSA’s Carolina Center for Specialty Surgery was named among U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers” list for 2025.

We’re further strengthening our neurosurgery and spine program through an enhanced partnership with Carolina NeuroSurgery & Spine Associates (CNSA), the largest neurosurgery practice in the country and a trusted provider of exceptional neurosurgical and spine care in the greater Charlotte community for over 85 years. Nearly 300 teammates at seven Charlotte-area CNSA clinics will join Atrium Health on October 1. Patients in the greater Charlotte area will continue to receive high-quality, compassionate care close to home at the same locations they do today, while benefiting from more coordinated services, cutting-edge technologies and expanded access to specialized services across the continuum of spine and neurosurgical treatments.
