Biography

Jonathan R. Garst, MD, provides comprehensive neurosurgical care. His clinical approach is rooted in a deep passion for surgery, inspired by his father—an orthopedic surgeon known for his technical expertise and commitment to patient outcomes.

A strong believer in collaborative and patient-centered care, Dr. Garst always starts by thoroughly diagnosing his patients through history, physical exams, imaging, and other necessary studies. He places a high priority on exploring non-surgical options first, only recommending surgery when it's truly necessary. Dr. Garst aims to use the least invasive techniques possible to achieve the best outcomes, always keeping his patients and their families involved in the decision-making process.

Dr. Garst’s commitment to his patients goes beyond surgery—he advises them to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle with regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and smoking cessation. He also emphasizes the importance of regular check-ins with primary care physicians to manage other health conditions.

Dr. Garst was drawn to CNSA for several reasons. After looking for a mid-sized city to raise his family, Greensboro stood out as the perfect place. He was impressed by the team’s commitment to work-life balance and the opportunity to work alongside surgeons who value family life. Additionally, CNSA’s excellent reputation and the chance to apply specialized techniques from his extensive training made joining the practice an easy decision.

Born in Chicago and raised in Peoria, Illinois, Dr. Garst and his wife were high school and college sweethearts. Their family includes two daughters and a German Shepherd mix dog.

Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Garst enjoys spending time with his wife and two young daughters. He’s an avid runner and cyclist, taking advantage of the outdoors whenever he can. He’s also a lifelong hunter and is excited to pick up fishing again now that his family has settled in North Carolina.
