Taylor Sommer, MD

Biography

Taylor Sommer, MD first considered becoming a neurosurgeon in 2008. The nervous system and the challenge of neurosurgery fascinated him, leading him to study neuroscience at the University of Utah. He went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine, where his desire to pursue neurosurgery continued to grow.

While Dr. Sommer practices general neurosurgery, he has a special emphasis in minimally invasive spine procedures and is excited to bring these techniques to patients throughout the South Carolina region.

Dr. Sommer believes in maximizing non-surgical treatment whenever possible. His goal is not simply to avoid surgery or perform surgery, but to help patients achieve the lifestyle they can be happiest with, whether that includes surgery or not.

His perspective as a physician has also been shaped by personal experience. After his wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent surgery, Dr. Sommer experienced firsthand what it is like to be on the other side of the conversation. That experience has made him even more committed to helping patients and their families navigate difficult diagnoses with compassion, understanding, and clear communication.

Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, Dr. Sommer enjoys staying active through golf, basketball, and skiing. He also enjoys cooking, baking, and spending time with his wife and their two children. Fluent in both English and Swedish, he is excited to serve patients throughout the Carolinas.
